Many Pakistani families in the UK, the USA, Canada, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar share the same worry: their children understand some Urdu at home but answer in English. Grandparents call from Pakistan and the conversation stays short. Urdu letters look unfamiliar. Weekend classes nearby are hard to find, or the timing never fits.
GetTutor.pk connects your child with a Pakistani Urdu teacher for live, one-to-one online classes. Lessons are built around your child’s age, current level and your family’s goals, whether that is everyday speaking, reading Urdu script, or school Urdu for a Pakistani curriculum.
Our offer is simple: 1 free trial class per subject, then paid classes.
Who these Urdu classes are for
Our online Urdu classes suit:
- Heritage learners: children of Pakistani families abroad who hear Urdu at home but rarely speak it.
- Complete beginners: children who are starting with the alphabet and basic words.
- Children following a Pakistani syllabus overseas: for example, students in Gulf schools or online schools that follow the Federal Board (FBISE). See our guide to FBISE online tuition for overseas students.
- Students taking Urdu as a school subject: tell us the exam or syllabus when you ask, and we will look for a suitable tutor.
Tell us your child’s age when you ask, and we will suggest how to start. Adults who want to improve their Urdu can also ask.
What your child will learn
Every child starts at a different point, so the tutor first checks your child’s level during the free trial class. A typical path looks like this:
1. Listening and speaking
Speaking comes first for most families abroad. The tutor uses simple conversation about family, food, school, Eid and daily routines. Children practise greetings, questions and short answers until they can hold a basic conversation with relatives.
2. The Urdu alphabet (huroof-e-tahajji)
Children learn to recognise and write each letter, including sounds that do not exist in English, such as ڑ, ٹ, ڈ and the aspirated sounds like کھ and پھ. Joining letters is introduced step by step.
3. Reading Urdu script
Once letters are familiar, children move on to short words, then sentences, then simple stories and poems. Reading Nastaliq script takes patience, so the tutor keeps practice short and regular.
4. Writing
Children practise copying, then writing words and short sentences on their own. Older students work on paragraphs, letters (khat) and essays (mazmoon) if they follow a school syllabus.
5. Vocabulary and culture
Stories, nazms, simple poems and festival vocabulary help children connect Urdu with family life and Pakistani culture.
How online Urdu classes work with GetTutor.pk
- Tell us about your child. Share your child’s age, country, time zone and current Urdu level through our contact page.
- We match a tutor. We look for a Pakistani Urdu teacher whose availability suits your time zone. You can mention any preference you have.
- Take 1 free trial class. Your child meets the tutor and you see how a lesson runs.
- Continue with paid classes. If you are happy, you agree a schedule and continue with paid classes. Fees are shared directly when you enquire.
Lessons run live over a video call. Your child needs a laptop or tablet with a camera, a headset if possible, and a notebook. You can read more on our how it works page.
Class timings for families abroad
Pakistan Standard Time (PKT) is ahead of most countries where Pakistani families live. That works in your favour: Pakistani tutors can often teach in the afternoon or evening of your local day.
| Where you live | Typical time difference from Pakistan | Common class slots (local time) |
|---|---|---|
| UAE | PKT is 1 hour ahead | After school, afternoon or evening |
| Saudi Arabia, Qatar | PKT is 2 hours ahead | After school, afternoon or evening |
| UK | PKT is 4–5 hours ahead (changes with UK clocks) | After school or weekend mornings |
| USA and Canada (East) | PKT is 9–10 hours ahead | Ask us about timings |
Exact slots depend on tutor availability.
Why choose a Pakistani Urdu teacher
- Native Urdu with clear English. A Pakistani teacher can explain in English at first and switch to more Urdu as your child improves.
- Understanding of family context. Tutors understand the words and expressions children hear from parents and grandparents.
- Familiar with Pakistani syllabuses. Useful if your child may study in Pakistan later, or follows a Pakistani-curriculum school abroad.
- One-to-one attention. Your child is the only student in the lesson, so the pace matches their level.
Tips for parents: helping your child keep Urdu alive at home
Classes work best when Urdu is also used between lessons. Simple habits help:
- Pick one Urdu time each day. For example, Urdu only at dinner.
- Read together. Even five minutes of an Urdu picture book or children’s magazine builds confidence.
- Use video calls with family. Ask grandparents to speak only Urdu with the child.
- Label things at home. Small Urdu labels on the fridge, door and table help with reading practice.
- Praise effort, not perfection. Children who are corrected too often stop trying.
